Tallgrass prairies are important habitats for a large quantity of wildlife. This includes the seeds which are favourite food source for many birds. Tallgrass prairie provides important winter habitat as well. The grasses grow in clumps allowing wildlife to conserve more energy as they move between the patches and it stays standing providing cover from avian predators. Tallgrass prairie is a fire dependent ecosystem. Intervention with prescribed burns is needed to ensure these restored and remnant habitats remain healthy and diverse.
